Champagne
Late October
In Chinatown
I put my feet
On the ground
Step one
Figure out
Which way is north
Step two
The nearest
Liquor store
To buy a
Champagne bottle
I can afford
And I’ll be
On my way
Right to
Your door
With a champagne bottle
We can
Drink it back
And talk about
The year that’s passed
Cuz I’ve been
Walking around all night
Looking
For your heart
From Philadelphia
Up to
Central Park
And I’ve never been
Too good
At saying exactly
What I mean
But when I get
To your street
I’m going to scream
What I mean:
I don’t need to see
You every day
But I still need you
Anyway
What the hell am I doing
In this city?
At two a.m.
I started pacing between
The water that kept
Falling on Delancey street
And I tried to focus on
The yellow swirl of the cars
So I could keep the blood
From falling out of my heart
Through the backseat of a cab
Where everything is a blur
And I could no longer remember
Where we were
When you walked away from me
Under the city sky
And I was left to face
The falling rain from
My eye
I keep having all these
Crazy thoughts that
You would quit
All of your jobs
And cancel all your
Evening plans you made
With all of
Your half friends
And in a couple of years
We could be
On a plane
To a great big house
In San Diego or Maine
If the flight makes you
Uneasy
We can drink back
Champagne
If you just need to rest
Well I can use some
Anyway
Cuz I’ve been
Walking around all night
Looking
For your heart
Manhattan
Queens
Bronx
Brooklyn
And Staten
Long Island was the
Worst part
And I’ve never been
Too good
At saying exactly
What I mean
But when I get
To your street
I’m going to scream
What I mean:
I don’t need to see
You every day
But I still need you
Anyway
What the hell am I doing
In this city?
