Pretty

I put on my overcoat
Forget the minutiae of last year’s winter
I’m going to a show
In a northern city where I am living

I hear the guest next door
Who used to rent the room I sleep in
I hope she’s happier now
As I sleep over the Atlantic Ocean

Community theatre
Oddities
Sooner or later
It’s backward through the trees

I see such a pretty face
But I saw a pretty face before

The Thai house on the hill
And a song about Becky
Far behind me
Through paper walls
She sighs
Will I forgive myself
Will I do better?

Community theatre
Oddities
Sooner or later
It’s backward through the trees

Now I see such a pretty face
But I saw a pretty face before

When the mercury fell
From the corner of my cell
I scratched out a plan
On the backside of my hand

And put on my overcoat
Forget the minutiae of last year’s winter
Now I’m turning around
From this town
The city where I saw a pretty face…

Pretty.
